How do I claim my bus pass

Eligible older people and also disable people are able to claim a free off peak travel pass for buses anywhere in England. This is something which has been operating for numerous years and is hoped to be kept by the new government.
The bus passes can be used anywhere in England during off peak times, these times are regarded as any time between 9.30am and 11.00pm Monday to Friday and all day at weekends and on public holidays. The bus passes supplied by the government are only accepted in England, this therefore means free travel is not provided in Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland. People who live outside England and wish to apply for a free bus pass should contact their local council for details on how to do so.
In order to receive a free bus a certain criteria must be met, this means that the person lives in England and are of the eligible age. The eligible age is people who were born after April 1950 and the age at which you become eligible is tied to changes in the State Pension age for women, this affects both mean and women who are wishing to apply.
For women who were born after 5 April 1950 they become eligible for a free older persons buss pass when they reach the pensionable age. For men who were born after 5 April 1950, they become eligible when they reach the pensionable age of a woman born on the same day.
In order to claim a free older persons bus pass the applicant must complete an application form and send it to their local council. Local authorities are responsible for operating their own bus pass schemes and therefore all applications must be sent to the local relevant council. Central government is not a supplier of free buses but can provide useful information on how to apply. Some local authorities may offer additional free services along with the bus pass and therefore people are advised to contact their local council for details.
There are numerous services which are not included in the free bus pass service. This includes where most seats can be reserved for example on coached, in many cases shuttle buses are not free, tourists on open top tours and other such services are not included, replacement services for trains are not included and also where the fare include extras such as refreshments or car parking.
