A mum from Cheshire whose teenage son has been left severely brain damaged by the MMR vaccine has won the battle for a compensation pay out, the government has awarded this. Robert Fletcher aged 18 from Warrington suffered a fit ten days after he received the MMR vaccination, when he was 13 months old. His mother Jackie was informed last week that she will receive 90,000 in compensation after the medical assessment panel reached this decision. This case has been on going for many years, in 1997 the family were turned down for any compensation, the original claim was forwarded through the Governments Vaccine Damage Payment Scheme. Jackies son, Robert now suffers from frequent epileptic fits, is unable to talk, unable to stand unaided or feed himself, although he has not been deemed to be autistic. Mrs Fletcher held the view that the vaccine was responsible for her childs sufferings for many years. The compensation panel consisted of one judge and two qualified medical professionals. Mrs Fletcher has campaigned for just and also compensation for the past 16 years, she stated I feel vindicated by it because over the years Ive been labeled anti-vaccine and a scaremonger and all sorts of things, when all Ive been trying to do is highlight whats happened to my son, to help safeguard other parents children. This compensation has raised many concerns over whether the compensation was granted due to the MMR vaccine being unsafe, although health ministers have strongly denied this. Members of the Department of Health have stated that the safety of the vaccine has been endorsed through numerous studies in many different countries. They are totally confident of the effectiveness of the vaccine.
