Scotlands Restaurant of the Year 2009 2010, an AA
Scotlands Restaurant of the Year 2009 2010, an AA recommended restaurant and the holder of a
Michelin star, the Plumed Horse is a restaurant that really needs no introduction. Located on
Henderson Street, the Plumed Horse offers lunch, dinner and tasting menus throughout the year,
closing only over the Christmas period.
Tables are not turned over in this restaurant where everything oozes quality, from the five star
service to the three course evening meal, available for a very reasonable 49. The midweek
supper, however, operates an affordable alternative with 3 courses for just 30. Dinner guests are
seated between 7pm and 9pm and have their tables all evening, whilst lunch diners are seated on
the half hour between noon at 1.30pm. Unfortunately the Plumed Horse is closed Sundays and
Mondays, although reservations can still be made on the telephone.
The menu is forever changing, with produce sourced from the finest quality farmers that
represents the season. The cooking is painstaking and diligent, with concise menus offering just
four choices for each course. Whether the ingredients are seafood from the Scottish ports or a
Sailor Jerry sorbet, everything is impeccable and divine.
The extensive wine list offers bottles ranging in price from 23 to well intro triple figures, with
French wines from Bordeaux and Burgundy a speciality. A fine selection of New World red and
whites are also available, along with a choice of dessert wines.
This low key establishment, run by Tony Borthwick, provides a well crafted, understated gem on
the backstreets of Leith. The small, well lit dining room holds only a handful of tables making a well
spaced area. As a result, the atmosphere is very quiet, relaxed and gentle.
