Wide-angle Lenses

Photography is a booming industry, with the photographs of celebrities often fetching thousands of pounds. As celebrities continue to go to great lengths to avoid being photographed, the photographers must use all the resources they have to take their photographs. This means using a variety of cameras and also lenses for these cameras. An example of one of the many different lenses used is the wide angled lens; this is one of the most popular lenses with professional photographers. A wide angled lens is used to produce a larger image circle than the standard typical lens of the same focal length. This wide angled lens enables a larger tilt and provides a wider field of view.
By definition the wide angle lens is a lens which has a focal lens which is shorter than the focal length of a standard lens for the size of image produced by the camera. Wide angled lenses are often used when the area which is being photographed is large in width and when a standard lens would not suffice.
There are two common types of wide angled lens; these include short focus lenses and retro focus lenses.
The short focus lenses are made up of many layers of glass elements which are usually shaped in symmetrical form in front of and behind the diaphragm. As the focal of the lens decreases in length, the distance of the rear element from the film plane and digital sensor also decreases. The short focus lens is not suitable for use with cameras which only have single lens reflex, although if reflex mirrors are fitted they can sometimes be used. The main intention for a short focus lens is to use the lens with a large format view camera. Such cameras are popular with professional photographers.
The retro focus lens is designed to operate with single lens reflex cameras, unlike the single lens reflex camera aimed at use with large format view cameras. The retro focus lens solves the problem of proximity through an asymmetrical design. The rear element is located further away from the film plane.
Wide angled lenses come in a range of different sizes including 14, 18, 21, 24, 28 and 35mm. These lenses will produce an image which may have some distortion due to the length of them. As well as wide angles lenses, ultra wide angled lenses are also available, these do not produce rectilinear image.
Many domestic cameras which are owned by people just wishing to take regular photographs, i.e. not professionals also have wide angled lenses. These can be bought from high street electrical stores and from many online electrical stores. One of the most well known camera producers with wide angled lenses is Nixon. Some digital cameras are now beginning to offer wide angled lenses; these are often expensive when compared to standard digital cameras. These wide angled lenses can also be bought as add on lenses.
