Kidney Donor in 14m Claim



A kidney donor is claiming 14m in damages after he nearly died in an operation in which he planned to donate his kidney to his father. The man who is 39 and can only be named as XYZ has told the High Court of his fears of the future. The man was operated on in 2008 at the Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth. The man suffered from injuries which were regarded as catastrophic, they disrupted his other kidney which led to him requiring a kidney transplant from his sister. XYZ has told the court that he has absolute certain knowledge that he was going to lose the organ within 20 years. The Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust has reportedly already admitted liability due the surgeon being regarded not only as negligent but reckless The surgeon is now subject to proceedings of the General Medical Council. The hearing which will hold four days is being held to assess the compensation; the trust has disputed some of the claims by the man which include substantial amounts for future loss of earning and future medical expenses. He has stated that he is worried about catching swine flu, viruses and bacteria. He has also stated that he is very angry that his two young children will grow up knowing that they may have to donate a kidney to him if they wish him to live to be a grandfather.
